MEO CLASS 1 · ORAL QUESTION 25

Q38 – Coating types as per ESP code

Answer

A- i) Hard Protective Coating – A Corrsn Prevntn system is normally considered a full hard protective coatn.

HPC should usually be epoxy coatn which serves as a barrier against corrosion in critical areas like ballast tnks & cargo spaces.

ii) Semi Hard Coating – It is a type of corrosion prevntn material applied to internal tnk surfaces that is not as hard or durable as traditional hard coatings such as epoxy, still offers more resistance to mechanical damage & abrasion compared to soft coatings

- SHC occupy a category b/w hard & soft coatings.

- They are generally less robust than HPC but are more durable than soft, oil type coatings

iii) Soft Coating – It refers to a category of coatings i.e. oil based or wax type that remains flexible or tacky, offering limited protect properties against corrsn
These are generally easier to apply but are less durable and vulnerable to abraision or local damage, especially areas subject to mechanical impact.

Implications under ESP code
a)If a semi hard or soft coating has applied or if no HPC was applied during constrctn, the tanks or void spaces must be examined at annual intervals.

b)If a HPC is found in “less than good” condition & not renewed, or if a soft or SHC is present, annual inspections & thickness measurements may be reqd. as determined by the surveyor.
