- Trace the heat number on the damaged plates.
- Look for the MTC certificate for the specific heat number. Either the records will be on the ship or can ask the class for the certificate copies
- The MTC cert will contain standard data for the specific heat number. You can get the density for the corresponding plates.
- Area & thickness of the plates you will get from the shell expansion plan. This will enable volume calculation.
- MASS (tonnes) = Volume x Density (obtained from the MTC)
- Heat Number- 1st two digits- furnace numbers
2nd two digits- year of melt
3rd digit- melt number
- Imperfection surface area = Influenced area/ Area under consideration.
