Answer
Whenever I join a ship, I would first take a thorough round of the entire ship with the outgoing C/E along with one old hand like preferably 2/E. I will check thoroughly for any defects, ask for history of defects, any signs of future troubles.
Assuming at the end of all inspections and discussions, I have received 25 deficiencies.
- I will first list these deficiencies in the order of their severity and assess that if these deficiencies make
the ship unseaworthy. If these deficiencies can be rectified before departure, then I can take over.
- If major deficiencies are found, then I will request master & off signing C/E to report NC and make a
defect report, request for repairs, workshop, spares in the same port and speak to the vessel manager. Depending on the situation I can take over if the ship is made seaworthy before leaving the port.
