MEO Class 1 written exam: a practical study guide

Preparing for Engineering Management means turning technical knowledge into a clear written answer. Use this guide alongside the month-wise question bank in MEOClassOne. It is a suggested study method, rather than an official syllabus or examination notice.

Start with a question, then identify the task

Read every part of the question before writing. Mark whether it asks you to define, explain, compare, enumerate or discuss. A comparison needs clear points of difference; a question about a chief engineer’s responsibilities needs actions and supporting records. Give each subpart its own heading so you can check that nothing is missed.

Build a revision map

Group practice questions by subject as well as by examination month. Useful revision groups include maritime safety and management, pollution prevention, survey and certification, personnel management, marine insurance and commercial operations. Record the subjects you find difficult and revisit them after attempting a different paper.

Use the free preview on the study portal homepage to explore the question bank. Full model-answer access follows the portal’s existing purchase and administrator-issued login process.

Use a consistent answer structure

  1. Begin with the definition or purpose of the subject.
  2. Identify the relevant instrument or source when the question requires one.
  3. State applicability and any conditions before quoting a requirement.
  4. Explain the practical shipboard actions, responsibilities and records.
  5. Use a labelled diagram, table or example if it makes the answer clearer.
  6. Check your response against every subpart of the question.

Check amendments before memorising figures

When a model answer quotes a date, limit, certificate interval or regulation number, keep a source note beside it. Distinguish adoption dates from entry-into-force dates and check whether the requirement applies to the ship described. Do not assume that an older examination answer reflects the requirement for a later sitting.

The official reference guide links to DG Shipping and IMO material to support this check. Confirm Mumbai MMD examination arrangements, eligibility and required documents against the applicable official notices.

Practise, compare and correct

Write an answer before opening the model response. Compare the structure, missing points and source references, then produce a shorter correction note in your own words. Keep a revision log with the question month, subject, error and next review date. For timed practice, use the duration and instructions stated for your actual examination.
