Answer
“Since I am newly joined, I will first take over properly and independently establish the technical, class and statutory status of the vessel. I will compare the existing dock specification with actual vessel condition and PMS/class requirements, prioritize statutory and dock-only jobs, ensure spares and resources, execute with class and yard under a controlled safety and quality system, and finally test, document and close every job before sailing.”

- Phase 1: Handover & Status Review
- Study handover notes, outstanding Class recommendations, previous drydock reports, and current PMS deferred jobs.
- Review shipboard stability condition with the Chief Officer (ensure minimum trim, zero heel, correct ballast condition).
- Phase 2: Work Specification Finalization
- Review superintendent's drydock specification list. Ensure mandatory Class survey items (hull valves, tailshaft clearance, rudder drop, sea chests, strainers) are accounted for.
- Integrate high-priority internal repair items (boiler retubing, major pump overhauls, pipeline renewals).
- Phase 3: Material & Safety Readiness
- Verify all specialized spares (tailshaft seals, hull valve repair kits, engine main bearings) are landed or staged at the yard.
- Prepare Risk Assessments (RA) and Permits to Work (PTW) for hot work, enclosed space entries, high-voltage isolations, and heavy lifting.
- Establish safety protocols with yard safety management (shore power connections, cooling water, pressurized fire main, grounding connection).
- Phase 4: Execution, Supervision & Recommissioning
- Assign specific oversight roles to E/R officers (2E on Main Engine/valves, 3E on boilers/pumps, ETO on switchboards/automation).
- Witness critical measurements: rudder clearances, tailshaft poker gauge readings, ICCP anode condition, hull valve overhauls.
- Perform Main Engine crankshaft deflections before docking and after undocking (afloat).
- Conduct sea chest, hull valve, and stern seal tightness checks before dock flooding; execute trial runs of machinery systems during recommissioning.
