Answer
The ISM Code establishes an international standard specifically for the safe management and operation of ships and prevention of pollution, and it is mandatory through SOLAS Chapter IX for ships to which it applies.
ISO 9001, by comparison, is an international Quality Management System (QMS) standard intended to help organizations consistently meet customer and applicable requirements and continually improve their processes. ISO 9001:2015 remains the current published edition as of August 2026; a replacement edition is expected in September 2026.
