MEO CLASS 1 · ORAL QUESTION 17

Q11.What is a Standard Ship? What are Characteristics of a Standard ship?

Answer

Five Specific Characteristics
1.Block Coefficient is 0.68.

2.Length to Depth ratio is 15. i.e. L/D = 15
3.No Superstructure
4.A parabolic shear of the freeboard Deck attaining a particular height at the forward and aft perpendiculars as prescribed by formula (depending on the length of the ship)
5.A minimum bow height above the waterline as prescribed by a formula (depending upon the Cb and length of the ship).

If Cb is greater, then its freeboard needs to be increased (Reg. 30). The reason is that a larger Cb causes an increase in the underwater volume, so the freeboard must be increased in order to keep the reserve buoyancy percentage the same.

Reg. 31 Correction for Depth – If L/D is less than 15 which is usually the case, the freeboard is increased The Tabular Freeboard is designed for a standard ship
