Current LLMC limits under the 1996 Protocol as amended

The 2012 amendments entered into force on 8 June 2015.


Loss of life and injury :

• Upto 2000 GT, 3.02 million SDR

• Additional 1208 SDR/ton for each ton from 2001-30000 tonnes

• Additional 906 SDR/ton for each ton from 30001-70000 tonnes

• Additional 604 sdr/ton for each ton in excess of 70000

For claims of property damage :

• Upto 2000 GT, 1.51 million SDR

• Additional 604 SDR/ton for each ton from 2001-30000 tonnes

• Additional 453 SDR/ton for each ton from 30001-70000 tonnes

• Additional 302SDR/ton for each ton in excess of 70000

FOR CLC limits :
TIER 1

• Upto 5000 GT : 4.51 million SDR,

• 5000-140000 GT : Additional 631 SDR/ton for every ton (MAX 89.77 mill)

• 140000 GT &above : 89.77 mill max

TIER 2

• Fund convention : 203 Mill SDR

• If in any calendar year the combined import by any 3 party states crosses 600 million tonnes, then the limit

for that year will 300.74 mill SDR

• Contributions by Oil importers importing in excess of 150000 tons for any year.

TIER 3

• Supplementary FUND : adopted 2003 , EIF 2005

• Each member state having received atleast 1 million tonnes of oil.

• Max payout is 750 mill sdr, including CLC 92 & FUND 92 contribution.

• Contribution taken from oil importers similar to fund convention. In case of shortfall from 1 million tonnes,

the state has to make the contribution for the remaining tonnes of oil. Reason for many states not being a party.
