Answer
A – Both are Class notations.
Clean Ship is a visionary approach aiming to develop the concept of vessels designed, constructed and
operated in an integrated manner to eliminate harmful discharges and emissions throughout their working life.
Clean Notation shows compliance with all mandatory MARPOL requirements regardless of any exemption granted by a Flag state administration. In addition, it contains additional requirements to prevent oil pollution. It also requires a vessel to have improved technical and management procedures to reduce discharges to sea and emission to air.
The concept of the Clean Ship was originally suggested by environmental NGO’s.
However, implementing the Clean Ship approach requires commitment and support from many different stakeholders.
e.g- OWS working on 15 ppm filtering equipment and monitor.
BW MS – D1 and D 2 standards
Recyclable notation i.e HKC not required for Clean Ship.
GWP < 4000
Clean Design:
It contains all coleen notation requirements plus additional Constructional and Design requirements such as stricter oily tank protection, installation of 5ppm oily bilge separator and alarm, installation of approved ballast water treatment system (D 2 standards). Clean Design also requires Compliance with Hong Kong Convention for Ship Recycling.
Vessels having Clean or Clean Design notation plus certified engines for IMO Tier III,
will be assigned with Clean (Tier III) or Clean (Design Tier III) notations to let the ship owners profile their greener ships.
