MEO CLASS 1 · ORAL QUESTION 11

Q12- Class notations. What is UMS class, how is it decided? What is Clean Ship? What are additional Class notations wrt Hull and machinery?

Answer

A. Classification notations are indicative of the specific Rule requirements which have been met.

- Additional Class notations are offered by individual Societies and may be selected by an owner wishing to

demonstrate that the vessel conforms to a particular standard that may be in excess of that required for classification.

- Depending on the Classification Society, the classification notations are assigned to the ship according to

ship type, service, navigation and/or other criteria which have been provided by the owner and/or builder, when requesting classification.

- Classification notations assigned to a ship are indicated on the certificate of classification as well as in the Register of Ships published by the Society. These notations can be generalized by the following types which may be used in combination:

• constructive symbol(malties cross) -

• main class symbol; (1A) – It certifies & denotes that the vessel’s hull, machinery & essential systems fully

comply with the core regultns of class, forming the base status of the vessel’s clasifctn

• ship type notation (container, tanker etc)

• Additional Class notations. (CSR, )

• service notations

• Descriptive notation(if feature of vessel not described by existing notation then descriptive notation) IH

M, etc

What are additional Class notation for hull nd M/C-
Hull- ice Class notation( ice 1A, 1B, 1C) , GP
M/C – UMS, DP,

-- UMS (unattended machinery space) notation-SOLAS chII-2-1, reg 46-53.

These are assigned to ship that are designed and equipped to operate engine room and m/c space unattended for specific period of time. ( this indicates that ships m/c can be controlled automatically and monitored with alarms system and safety features in place.

For UMS Class notation consider following-

• Automatic monitoring and control(equipped with system – propulsion, power generation, other Critical

machinery)

• Alarms and safety system( accessed for ECR and bridge)

• Redundancy( level of backup)

• Remote monitoring( capabilities for same- bridge , ECR etc)

• Safety protocol- ( protocol and procedures in place for manage situation)

• Compliance with class society standards

• Regular inspection and maintenance

• Engineers call alarms

• Communication system

• Bridge control and backup control and overriding device.

Clean ship- these notation awarded to ship that meets higher environmental standards beyond the basic regulatory requirements. This reflects a ship’s commitment to minimize its environmental impact.( can be through opearatonal practice, batter design and construction)
For this ship should have-
Emergency response service- yes
Vessel should have BW MS standards- D1 or D 2
Vessel should have class notaionVCS( vapour emission)
SOC – as per MARPOL anx- VI
