Answer
A- The IMO M@SS code introduces new requirements and changes that significantly affect the role &
responsibilities of C/E are –
1.Shift from Onboard to Remote management – C/E may have to oversee engineering functions either onboard, remotely from a shore based center, or through a combination of both, depending on the degree of ship autonomy.
2.Extended Technical competencies – C/E must acquire new skills, especially in operating & supervising advanced automated & remot control systems, cyber-physical infra & digital monitoring tools
3.Certifctn & training – The code will introduce new standards for certfctn & training, requiring C/E to demonstrate competence in managing & remotely operated vessel sustems
4.Responsblty for system integrity – C/E retain respnsblty for the sade operation, maintnce & integrity of the ship’s engineering systems, even when these are managed by software, A.I or remote operators.
5.Incident Response and Oversight – In the event of anomalies, failures or emergencies the C/E may be reqrd to intervene either remotely or by directing intervntn ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory protocols.
6.Collaboration with other domains – The boundaries b/w engineering, IT and operational control are more interconnected. C/E must work closely with system engineerings, software specialists and shore-based operators.
Challenges of MASS ship
1.Legal and Regulatory issues – Current legal framework for maritime transport assumes seafarers are onboard to operate and control ship board systems and functions. Therefore, using M@SS may require adaptations or amendments to existing conventions and regulations such as liability, insurance, registrtn, testing of capabilities and cre wing certficatns.
2.Technical and operational issues – The reliability & security depends on the performance & robustness of their systems and components such as propulsion, navig atn, communctn or powr. They may face technical failures or malfnctns that could compromise their functionality, performance or safety.
- It depends on sensor for navig atn & collision avoidance. Integrating these & reliable operation is
challenging.
3.Cyber Security Threats – Interconnected systems are vulnerable to cyber threats including hacking & illicit remote control.
4.High Cost of Tech
5.Ethical & Social Issues – Its use may raise ethical & social questions about the role & responsibility of humans in life saving situations
6.Human Element in emergency – Lack of crew could hinder rapid response in unexpected emergency situations.
