CO2 Release procedure:-

1.Procedure of Releasing CO2 to t the Engine Room on Ships

2.Muster and take head count.

3.Master will take decision, deepen ending upon the situation and as per the company policy.

4.If total CO2 flooding of engine ro oom is to be done, master will consult with chief f engineer.

5.Nearest coast guard to be inform med as soon as possible.

6.Ensure proper sealing of the engine room.

7.Make sure emergency generator r is running and on load. Power is required for ru unning emergency fire pp for

boundary cooling.

8.All access doors, vent flaps, blow wer flaps, skylights, hatches, fire flaps, to be closed.

9.Quick closing valves to be opera ated.

10.Emergency stops for lube oil pum mps, fuel oil pumps to be operated.

11.All machinery in engine room to be stopped.

12.Ensure all personnel vacated engine room.

13.CO2 must be released by competent engineer.

14.Break the glass and take out key for CO2 release cabinet from key box. Using local CO2 release cabinet is preferred.

15.Open the release cabinet. Audio visual alarms will sound (ventilation blower may or may not trip depending upon system)
16.In the CO2 release cabinet, open pilot cylinder valve first. Now open valve 1 for master valve first. Then open valve 2 for CO2 releasing mechanism. CO2 will be released after 60seconds of time delay.

17.Now the system pressure can be checked from the pressure gauge on the manifold.

18.If CO2 is not released, then follow emergency releasing procedure. Open master valve manually and open each CO2 main bottle by manual actuation lever.

3/E missing in headcount, will you release CO2?

 All the efforts to be made to search 3/E, taking into account the safety of onboard crew.

 Assess the Situation with master for safety of Crew, Vessel and Environment.

 Inform about the situation to company and concerned authorities (Coast guard, Port state, Flag, etc….).  Let the company decide further course of action.

 Depending on the dynamic situation, master will analyze the life of one person lost V/s Life of other staff at risk.

 In worst case scenario Master has overriding authority and can take decision in consultation with C/E to operate CO2 system, but he has prove the same.
