Answer
make a list of machinery starting with propulsion system
consult maker's instructions for maintenance strategies
carry out criticality analysis and highlight machinery deemed to be critical
list out the methodology employed for each
“Sir, to make PMS for a vessel, first I will prepare a complete equipment register of all machinery, safety, pollution prevention, electrical, automation, hull and deck equipment. Then I will collect maker’s manuals, class survey status, statutory requirements, company SMS, previous maintenance records and defect history. For each equipment, I will create job cards with maintenance interval, procedure, safety precautions, required spares, responsible officer and acceptance criteria.
PMS will be calendar-based, running-hour-based, condition-based and corrective. Critical equipment such as main engine, steering gear, generators, emergency generator, emergency fire pump, OWS, boiler safety devices and fire-fighting systems will be specially identified with shorter intervals and CE verification.
I will prioritize jobs by risk: safety of life first, then pollution prevention, propulsion and steering, electrical power generation, class/statutory items, PSC-sensitive items, cargo operation items, reliability jobs and finally housekeeping jobs. If a job cannot be done on time, I will carry out risk assessment, record the reason, inform Master and company, arrange spares or shore assistance, and defer only with proper approval. PMS should never be closed without actual work being done.”
