Answer
Hold spaces surrounding independent cargo tanks (Type A, B, or C) must be equipped with a dewatering system to handle ballast leakage, shell damage, or heavy condensation.
Equipment Used: Water Jet Eductor System

Technical & Safety Features
- Pump Mechanism: Water Jet Eductors driven by seawater supplied from a high-capacity ballast or fire pump located in the non-hazardous Engine Room.
- Alternative Equipment: Air-driven portable submersible pumps (e.g., Wilden diaphragm pumps) powered by dry control air or nitrogen.
- Why Eductors are Mandatory in Hold Spaces:
- Intrinsic Safety: Eductors have zero moving mechanical parts and no electrical components inside the hazardous zone (Zone 1/Zone 0), eliminating any spark hazard.
- Preventing Cross-Contamination: The driving fluid source is located outside the gas-hazardous zone. Non-return valves and spool pieces prevent flammable gas from traveling back into the machinery space.
- High Solids / Cold Handling: Eductors handle cold water, debris, and low-viscosity mixtures without clogging or freezing up.
