Answer
Fire Fighting Appliances (FFA) are tested and maintained under IMO MSC.1/Circ.1432 and SOLAS Chapter II-2.
Routine Onboard Tests:
- Weekly/Monthly: Visual checks, fire main pressure check, functional test of emergency fire pump & Main fire pump, pressure checks on portable extinguishers & EEBD, SCBA bottle pressure checks, Condition check of Fireman outfit.
- Annual: Operational testing of fixed gas/foam/water-spray systems, testing remote stops and quick-closing valves, foam sample analysis.
Hydrostatic Testing Requirements:
Appliance / Component | Hydrostatic Test Interval | Testing Pressure / Standard |
|---|---|---|
Portable Extinguishers (CO₂, Dry Powder, Water/Foam) | Every 10 Years | At least 1.5 times working pressure (or factory test pressure stamped on cylinder). |
SCBA & EEBD Air Cylinders | Every 5 Years (or per Flag/manufacturer) | Tested at 1.5 times working pressure (e.g., 450 bar for a 300 bar cylinder) at shore facility. |
Fixed CO2 System Cylinders | 10% of cylinders at 10 years, 100% prior to 20 years. | 250 bar (for high-pressure CO2). |
Fire Hoses | Annually (Visual/Service Pressure), replacement/hydro-test as required. | Tested to maximum working pressure of fire main (min 10 bar). |
