MEO CLASS 1 · ORAL QUESTION 4

IACS

Answer

IACS = International Association of Classification Societies.

It is an independent, apolitical, not-for-profit association of major classification societies. Its member societies' rules cover more than 90% of the world's cargo-carrying tonnage. As of 2026, IACS states that it has 12 member societies.

Its main purpose is to develop and maintain minimum technical requirements relating to the design, construction, maintenance and survey of ships and offshore/marine facilities. It also assists IMO and other regulatory bodies by providing technical expertise.

Important IACS outputs for your oral exam are:

UR – Unified Requirements: minimum technical requirements that IACS members incorporate into their rules.

UI – Unified Interpretations: common interpretation of statutory/class requirements where uniform understanding is required.

Procedural Requirements – PRs: requirements governing IACS member processes and procedures.

Recommendations: recommended technical practices which may not have the same mandatory status as URs.

QSCS – Quality System Certification Scheme: ensures IACS member classification societies maintain the required quality system and professional standards.
