Treaties – Written agreement between 2 or more states. They are directly negotiated between states, usually to end conflicts
Convention definition – It is a multilateral treety negotiated under a parent organization, between different countries that is legally binding to the contracting states. Conventions are normally open for participation by the international community as a whole, or by a large number of starts. Usually, these instruments negotiated under the auspices of an international orgnztn are entitled concvntn. E.g. SOLAS, MARPOL
Protocol Definition – It’s an ancillary agreement to the existing convention. It is one of the ways in which a Convntn is modified. They are not binding on all the states that have ratified the original convention. They are only binding to the states that ratify the new protocol. Protocol follows the same steps of adoption, signature, ratification & accession, an any other convention.
Code Definition – The details of the Convntn regulations are sometimes included in a cod, which is kept separate from that of the Convntn & only referred to, in the Convntn. Cods can be both mandatory & non-mandatory, or even in parts of it can be made mandatory.
Resolution Definition – are the finalized Documents which are accepted by the IMO or any of its constituent bodies. Resolution require 2/3rd majority of members present & voting. They can be for bringing about an amendment, guidelns etc.
