Q60 – What is Chain Register?

Answer

A- A record of the particulars of test & examination of lifting aplliances, loose gear and heat (annealing)

should be entered & maintained in the register of machinery, chains, wire ropes etc called the Chain Register.

- It is a register of periodical test & examinations & certificates. It deals with lifting gear such as derricks, cranes

or hoists, winches & their accessories. It’s technical, safety & adminstrtn issues are regulated by ILO & Dock safety regultns.

-It is blue colored buklet also referred to as Form 99.

- The tests, examintns & inspections included in the register are based on the requirements of the ILO convantn

- no. 152
Purpose – is to ensure that the vessel’s lifting appliances are initially certified by a competent person & also

to establish periodically that they continue to be in safe working order.

- Certificates shall be obtained from a competent person w.r.t. the tests & attached to the register.

The Chain register is divided into 3 parts –
4.Part I – Initial & periodical load test of lifting appliances & their annual thorough examintn 5.Part II – Initial & periodical loat test of loose gear & their annual thorough examintn.

6.Part III – Annealing of chains, rings, hooks, shackles & swivels (other than those that are exempted) Exempted are as follows –
Chains made of C.I; Plate link chain; Chains, rings, hooks, shackles & shivels made of steel, Pulley blocks
