Answer
Broaching – refers to a dangerous situation where a vessel loses its directnl stability in waves, especially following seas. This causes the vessel to be unable to maintain course due to a large yaw movement exceeding the rudder’s ability to steer. As a result, the ship abruptly turns sideways to the waves, risking severe rolling & possible capsizing.
In short it is the dangerous & uncntrold turning of a vessel sideways to the waves due to loss of steering mainly caused by wave & wind effects with a high risk of capsizing.
During Birching, the vessel surfs fwd on steep following waves, causing the bow to dig into a wave ahead which decelerates the vessel
Ways to prevent broaching
1.Reduce Speed Appropriately – It often occurs when the vessel’s speed matched or exceeds the speed of the waves, causing surf-riding & loss of steering.Reducing speed below a critical value based on the ship’s
