MEO CLASS 1 · ORAL QUESTION 1

Q2. Condition of Assignment OR freeboard criteria of a vessel OR Summer Loadline criteria?

Answer

1. Adequate Strength of hull – The main hull scantlings are specially analysed based on detailed assessment of stresses.

2. Adequate Reserve buoyancy – The minimum freeboard is based upon a standard geometry of the ship; as seen in tankers, which are separated from other types of ships. Corrections are applied for various factors like block coefficient, extent of superstructure, L/D ratio etc. with reference to those of a standard vessel ( normally taken to be having a L/D ratio of 15:1, a block coefficient of 0.68 at 0.85 of the molded depth, a standard sheer profile and a standard round of beam).

3. Adequate Watertight integrity – Proper closing appliances in required openings, to prevent entry of water into the hull.

4. Stability Considerations
5. Adequate protection of crew – With respect to strength of Deck houses, gangways, guard rails, lifelines and height of working platform.

6. Limitation of wetness on Deck
7. Regulation 10 to 26 of Loadline

Conditions to be met before Assigning LL
3.Enough structural strength should be possessed
4.Enough reserve buoyancy should be possessed
5.Provision for drainage
6.Prevent water entry into hull
7.Master should have stability info buklet
8.Height & stiffening of hatch coamings & constrctn of hatch covers, carrier, cleats & locking bars.

9.Ventilators must have coamings & arrangements for permanent closing 10.Openings on ship side below freeboard Deck must have sufficient doors.

11.Machinery space opening must be properly framed & constructed whilst doors in them must comply with LL requirement as per convention
12.Discharge from spaces below freeboard Deck msut have NRV & arrangmnt for closing on Deck. Min. freeing ports must be provided.
