MEO CLASS 1 · ORAL QUESTION 19

Q10.Desribe the new types of Hull coatings.What is antithrombic paints.?

Answer

Ans.1.CDP- controlled depletion polymers.

It is copper based has very strong biocides which are released by diffusion.Its tin free paints .Avg hull roughness increases by 40 micron/ year.

It's lesser costlier and suitable for esp n passenger vessels . Service life of 3 yrs 2.Self polishing copolymer-it is also copper based with small amount of biocides .

Spc through hydrolysis with water releases biocides but in a more controlled manner compared to CDP.

AHR is 20microns with service life of 5 yrs.

3.Hybrid spc- It has features of surface tolerance like CDP and control release of biocides likspc .

Average life not more than 3 yrs and average Hull roughness is around 20-30 microns per year.

* High surface tolerance
* Attractive volume solids.

4.Foul releasing paints-it is free of biocides.Its silicon based.Its AHR is around 5 microns per year.

They are such that if the coating is intact then no recoatng required for several years .

5.LF sea paints- Developed by Nippon .

It uses a component called hydrogel it creates indentation on hull surfaces n allows water to fill which minimises the friction drag.It reduces fuel consumption by 4%.

LF-Sea in adv version is called A-lf sea -it is a super low friction biomimetic antifouling that works on water trapping function .It has copper silyl copolymer for antifouling function.Works similar to lf-sea.

6.Antithrombic paints-It has microdomain structure hydrophobic and hydrophilic function.i.e resistance to water and dissolved in water. Hydrolysis is also incorporated into it.

Due to hydrolysis and stain resistant properties it prevents marine life from attaching to the hull.its very smooth n this frictional resistance is less n reduces fuel consumption.
