Answer
Ans – As a CE, use 360 deg approach, call Duty Engineer and confirm whether he noticed that vibration during morning rounds. Get another AE if required and take on load.
Check amperage of the running pump.
1. Changeover to stand by pump. Compare amperage.
2. Auto start of the defective pump is switched off.
3. Check motor temperature using IR gun. Advise E.T.O to check temperature and vibrations. Remainig technical troubleshooting to be delegated to 2/E and C/E can provide inputs on what all to check.
4. Compare the noise with the stand by pump. If in excess that means there is some issue with the pump or motor. Compare Vibratns using vibration meter like Coltraco and check exterior and support brackets/ foundation whether all intact. No rusting/ loose support etc.
5. Put the job in defect list.
6. See the previous overhaul reports of the pump and motor of the defective pump along with previous pictures an

8. Spares of the pump and motor to be checked and kept standby. Inform the master about the problem and inform the company with the job progress. 9. Along with E/O – IR of the motor to be tested and motor to be turned freely by hand. If moving freely – then the bearings are in good order. 10. Isolate the defective pump sea water IN Out valves and remove the pump. Before removing pump, use the vent cock to verify that valves are holding. 11. Rotation of the pump to be checked if moving freely. 12. Whichever not moving freely has to be dismantled and check for damages. All parts to be internally inspected including condition of impeller and the wear ring clearances. If open bearing – greasing to be done at regular intervals. 13. Replace defective parts and update the same in the PMS with spares consumed. Make a report of the same and send to the company with Root cause analysis and preventive action. 14. Try out the pump during engine room man hours for a couple of days and monitor the temperature and noise.
