Q19 – Sampling Quantity Requirements for Treated Ballast Water

Answer

A – As per 2020 G2 Guidelines no fixed quantity is given. So sampling quantity may vary depending upon the method of analysis to be used for determination. It is impracticable to take large samples.

Various MOUs & Port state Control have their own guidelines of how much sample to be taken.

-In line sample is preferred
-Sampling should be aimed to obtain a series of 10 min sample during the discharge and avoid the first & last 5 minutes.

- Sampling for ≥50 microns requires at least 300L of sample water - For indicator microbes = 1L sample
- 10-50 microns – 5L to 6L
