Answer
“As Chief Engineer, my first priority during any conflict is safety. If the conflict is affecting a critical operation, I will stop or stabilize the job, separate the persons and place the machinery in a safe condition. I will then speak to both parties individually, listen impartially and verify the facts from logs, permits, PMS records, witnesses and standing orders. I will identify whether the root cause is communication, workload, unclear responsibility, competence, fatigue or misconduct. Once the persons are calm, I will conduct a joint meeting, establish professional ground rules and seek a collaborative solution by clarifying duties, providing training or assistance and agreeing on corrective actions. I will document and monitor the outcome. In cases of violence, bullying, harassment, discrimination or serious insubordination, I will immediately inform the Master and follow the SMS, disciplinary procedure and MLC onboard complaint procedure, ensuring confidentiality and protection against retaliation.”
