Answer
Where is Cargo Density Given?
Certificate of Fitness (COF) / International Certificate of Fitness for the Carriage of Liquefied Gases in Bulk: Specifies the maximum permissible density of the cargo the vessel is structurally designed to carry.
Cargo Manifest / Bill of Lading / Certificate of Quality: Provided by the shipper/terminal before loading, indicating the actual density of the current cargo at a specific reference temperature.
Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS): Provides generic density data for handling and safety.
Which Density of Cargo Can You Carry?
You can carry any cargo whose density is equal to or less than the maximum permissible design cargo density specified in your vessel’s Certificate of Fitness (COF) and Loading Manual.
If you must carry a cargo with a density exceeding the design limit, you can only do so under strict conditions: reducing the filling volume of the tanks (partial filling) so that the total structural load limits (t/m2) on the tank inner bottom and bulkheads are not exceeded, and verifying the condition using the approved loading computer.
