Answer
Crash Stop Test, is a mandatory maneuver conducted during a vessel's Sea Trials to comply with IMO Standards for Ship Manoeuvrability (Resolution MSC.137(76)).
Procedure: With the vessel proceeding at full sea speed ahead, the engine is suddenly ordered to "Full Astern."
Purpose: To determine the exact time taken and the distance traveled (Track Reach) before the ship comes to a complete halt dead in the water.
Application: These parameters are plotted and posted on the bridge maneuvering poster. It provides the Master and Pilots with critical data on the vessel's stopping ability in emergency collision-avoidance situations.
