Answer
Resolution MEPC.355(78), adopted on 10 June 2022, is the 2022 Interim Guidelines on Correction Factors and Voyage Adjustments for CII Calculations, known as CII Guidelines G5. It supports MARPOL Annex VI Regulation 28.
Its purpose is to allow fair calculation of attained annual operational CII where certain unavoidable operational or cargo-related fuel consumptions occur. It includes voyage adjustments for safety-related situations and ice navigation, and correction factors for reefer electrical load, cargo cooling/reliquefaction on gas carriers, tanker discharge pumps, boiler fuel used for cargo heating and discharge, standalone engine-driven cargo pumps, STS operations and shuttle tankers.
However, these corrections do not physically reduce emissions. They only adjust the CII calculation. Actual reduction of CII must be achieved by reducing fuel consumption through efficient voyage planning, cargo planning, cargo heating optimisation, faster cargo operations, reduced waiting time, proper maintenance and good SEEMP implementation. All corrections must be supported by logbook entries, fuel records, cargo operation records and reported through IMO DCS/SEEMP procedures.
When to use G5
| Category | Purpose | Typical Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Voyage Adjustments | Exclude data | Severe weather, SAR, ice navigation, dry-dock. |
| Correction Factors | Adjust capacity/energy | Reefer units, cargo heating, STS transfers, DP systems. |
